Gray Cashmere Benjamin Moore Bedroom
I am often asked for advice on how to choose the right paint color.
Judging by the number of "favorite paint color/go-to paint color" pins on Pinterest, it's clear that selecting the right paint color is something MANY people struggle with. But here's the thing…getting paint color right is totally dependent on the actual space you're using the color in!
Aside from the hard finishes (flooring, countertops, etc.) and the fabrics you are already using in the room, LIGHT also impacts how the color will present in the room.
It's not as easy as choosing a color based on a picture you see on Pinterest or in the latest issue of House Beautiful magazine.
That being said, today, I thought I'd share with you six paint colors we've used in recent projects AND why they work so well for the spaces. I'll also share several additional inspirational images featuring the color to illustrate how different the same color can look in different environments.
Why? Because I want you to see how different environments and different levels of light exposure affect the way a color presents itself in a space!
So, here they are in no particular order. Six of my favorite paint colors!
COLOR #1:Benjamim Moore OC-117 Simply White
Color Category: Off-White
Why it works in this space: The room gets lots of natural light. The white brightens this previously gloomy room while creating the perfect backdrop for all of the color we used in the space.
Where you can use it: In any room in the house where there is lots of natural light flooding in with hard finishes that lend themselves to off-white rather than crisp bright/blue white!
Here are few other rooms where Simply White shines…

COLOR #2: Benjamin Moore 2138-60 Gray Cashmere
Color Category: Blue-Green Gray
Why it works in this space: This color gives the walls just the hint of color the client wanted for her bedroom. It's a soft, warm gray, so it doesn't come off as cold! It also beautifully picks up one of the colors in our client's silk duvet.
Where you should use it: This color works well in bedrooms where you want to create a calm, restful feeling.
As you look at the inspiration photos below, pay attention to the way lighting (AND PHOTOGRAPHY) changes the way the color looks!

COLOR #3: Sherwin Williams SW 6150 Loyal
Color Category: Deep blue
Why it works in this space: Loyal is very dramatic and enveloping. It packs a punch, and there is just a hint of green in it to warm it up! We used this color to create the perfect backdrop for this majestic bed and regal mirrored chest of drawers.
Where you should use it: This color would work well in a bedroom or study…any place you want to create a cozy yet drama-filled affect!
The photo below, in one shot, shows you how different this color would look in a room filled with light versus one with little light. Look at the image from left to right to see what I mean…

COLOR #4: Sherwin Williams SW 6496 Oceanside
Color Category: Greenish-Blue
Why it works in this space: Any shade of teal or peacock blue is always a winner in my book! To me, this color has the perfect balance between blue and green so it could work with cool or warm color palettes. It works well in this space because it almost perfectly matches the teal undertones in our client's extensive art collection.
Where you should use it: This color is great on cabinetry in the kitchen or bathroom. It's also a good color choice for a study or a kids' playroom.
Remember what I said about this color working with a variety of color palettes? The first photo below has a cooler palette where the second has a warmer palette. See how this color fits in either way?

COLOR #5: Sherwin Williams SW 6148 Wool Skein
Color Category: Greenish-Beige
Why it works in this space: Sometimes you want a "light" wall color but your hard finishes and furnishings eliminate white as an option. Wool Skein is on the lighter end of the "beige" spectrum, but the slightly green undertone keeps it from turning pink on you!
Where you should use it: Use this color on the walls in a family room or living room or on the kitchen cabinets for a light, bright kitchen without the harshness of white.

COLOR #6: Benjamin Moore 2062-20 Gentleman's Gray
Color Category: Navy Blue
Why it works in this space: The name of this color is deceptive. It's not a staid, buttoned-up gray at all! This client wanted drama from the moment you entered her front door. She loves the color blue, so we chose this shade to set the stage and paired it with a similarly colored luxurious velvet embroidered wallpaper!
Where you should use it: Any and everywhere! Small spaces, large spaces, cabinetry…this color can do it all!
Again, notice how lighting, photography and even SHEEN change the appearance of this color. The first photo has a matte finish which typically yields a more saturated version of any hue. The second photo is a high gloss finish, and the final photo shows this color in a satin finish.

Now that you've seen my picks and some additional rooms featuring those same colors, I hope you can appreciate the main point of this post:
Choosing your next paint color based on the color of the year or a photo you see on Pinterest might not yield the results you hope for. To get the best results, you have to first understand how and why certain colors work better in certain rooms than others.
Many times clients or friends will call me to help them select paint colors or they'll send me a text asking my thoughts on a particular color. My answer is always the same: I need to see the space first.
Only after I assess the rooms light and take into consideration the furnishings in the space along with the mood the homeowner wants to convey in that room can I make the right paint color recommendation!
I hope these tips inspire you to gain confidence in your next paint selection. Please let me know what you thought about this post in the comments below! Do you like any of my favorite colors? Will you approach selecting your next paint color differently now that you know my tips?
